Ringing in the Ears and Tinnitus

Simple Steps in Dealing with Symptoms of Tinnitus

Have you ever been out on a pop concert and later noticed a strange noise hissing inside your head? Chances are you might have gotten hearing damage and tinnitus. The symptoms of tinnitus range from low buzzes to load roaring sounds inside the ears or head without external source.

Tinnitus is caused by many factors. According to experts the leading cause of this disorder is exposure to loud noise, which is also a major culprit of hearing loss. This is due to the fact that high intensity sound destroys the fragile inner ear tissue. The inner ear houses the cochlea which in turn contains the fluid-bathed hair cells. The hair cells suffer the damage upon prolonged exposure to loud noise. This damage results to perception of abnormal noises called tinnitus.

Other causes include vascular disorders, hypertension, anemia, temporomandibular injury, head trauma, Meniere’s disease, hypersensitivity to some prescription and non-prescription drugs, presbycusis, and stress. Nevertheless, many cases of tinnitus have causes that remain unknown.

The following are the steps you might find helpful when symptoms of tinnitus strike.

1.    Do not stay in areas where there is much noise. After being exposed to loud noise, your ears suffer the consequences and one manifestation is ringing ears. Avoiding further damage is by avoiding noisy places. If you have to pick a cab down a vehicle-packed and noisy street, cover your ears or wear ear protection. Do the same if you are working in environments where there is noise-generating machinery.

2.    Avoid quiet places as well. You will definitely hear the weird head noises when you get in quiet rooms. That is because external noise is absent, making the internal head noise more hearable. If your room gets too quiet at night, play your stereo at low volume to help mask the disrupting noise caused by tinnitus. Radio static, electric fan, wall clocks that tick, and soothing music can be beneficial as they act like tinnitus maskers.

3.    Find time to relax and do not tire yourself at work. Did you notice after a tiring day that the ear ringing symptoms seemed to get louder? That is because fatigue is stress and stress aggravates tinnitus. It is not clear whether stress causes tinnitus, but some studies also show that stress may be directly linked to the head ringing malady. Better stay relaxed most of the time, and learn to manage depression and anxiety. You can always opt for counseling, should you fail to be able to achieve this by yourself.

4.    Be healthy. This is basic. Healthy people can cope with negative conditions better than those who are not. Eat right. Sleep well and look cheerful.

The symptoms of tinnitus do not often warrant serious medical attention and you need not fret about not having to find a cure for tinnitus. The most important person in the process of dealing with it is you.
